"The Bachelor of Arts" by R. K. Narayan was first published in 1937. It happens to be the second book of a trilogy that begins with "Swami and Friends" and ends with "The English Teacher."
The story is set in Malgudi. It is a fictional town that the author had invented for several of his stories and novels.
