BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA — On August 22, Kirk Fraser brought his parents and a friend out to Powell River for a nice, relaxing boat ride. What they got instead was nature at its finest.
A lone seal, noticeably terrified, threw itself onto the 33-foot zodiac boat. As the cellphone video shows, it was feverishly trying to escape a pod of a dozen orca whales, hunting.
The man holding the camera, Nick Templeman, runs a whale watching excursions company, and says he’s never seen anything like this before. The pod of orcas circled the boat for half an hour, hoping the seal would slip up. Though the scared little guy jumped off and back on the boat three times, the whales never got the kill. Eventually, they gave up and swam away.
Once the coast was clear, the seal returned to the waters a survivor.
