Notes: The teams last met way back in the 2004 season. Oklahoma concluded play a year ago with a record of 11-2. They qualified for the playoffs but were defeated soundly in the semifinals to Clemson by the score of 37-17. Bob Stoops enters his 18th year with the school and will have seven starters back on offense and six to the defense. Baker Mayfield returns for his senior year with the school at starting quarterback. His top running back Samaje Perine is back and is a junior. Mayfield completed 68.1% of his throws last year for 3700 yards with 36 touchdowns and 7 picks. Perine is coming off a year where he rushed for 1349 yards with 16 touchdowns and six yards per carry average. The Sooners were the sixth best scoring offense from college football in 2015 as they averaged 43.5 points per game. Defensively they were 39th by allowing 364 yards per game and do a good job in pass defense.
Houston finished off play in 2015 with a record of 13-1. They earned a Peach Bowl berth and defeated Florida St by the score of 38-24. Their only defeat was a 20-17 road loss at Connecticut. Tom Herman returns for his second year with the program. He will have six starters back on offense and five to the defense. Greg Ward returns for his senior year and will have many of his playmakers back. Ward hit on 67.2% of his throws in 2015 for 2828 yards with 17 touchdowns and 6 picks. They finished tenth best in scoring by averaging 40.4 points per game. Defensively the Cougars were run stoppers ranking eighth but surrendered 274 yards passing per game which was 116th in the nation.
