AMRITSAR, INDIA — When a man turned up at the hospital complaining of severe abdominal pain, doctors initially diagnosed it as a tumor growth. But after several tests, they realized it was something much more bizarre.
The Chandigarh Tribune reports that 42-year-old policeman Surjeet Singh was addicted to the taste of knives and had been gorging himself on them for a full two months.
Doctors performed a grueling five-hour surgery on him to remove the 28 he claimed to have eaten, and in the process found 12 more. Most of the knives were folded up, but some were not. When fully extended, the knives measured around seven inches.
The blades were stabbing Singh from the inside, causing profuse bleeding that would have killed him had he waited much longer to seek medical attention.
Singh is recovering from the operation. Doctors believe his strange addiction stems from a mental disorder, so he will need to be cleared by a psychiatrist before he can leave the hospital.
