Aug 22, 2016 – A military alliance between Tehran and Moscow showed signs of strain as newly launched Russian bombing missions to Syria from an Iranian air base came to a quick end and Iran’s defense minister accused Russia of “showing off.”
Russia and Iran had been fostering closer ties centered around their mutual interests in Syria, where both back President Bashar al-Assad’s embattled government. The cooperation reached a new level a week ago, when Russia announced it was using an air base in western Iran for bombing missions to Syria in support of the Assad regime’s forces.
