Fourteen players from Punjab represent India at Rio Olympics

Chandigarh/ Rio de Janeiro, Aug 11: Punjab and sports go back a long time. Be it hockey, wrestling or shooting, the state has produced many players who have represented India at international tournaments. At the ongoing Rio Olympics 2016, as many as 14 sportspersons from Punjab are a part of the Indian contingent. In the hockey squad alone, there are five players who hail from Punjab. They include Sardara Singh, Rupinder Pal Singh and Akashdeep Singh. The hockey team has won two of the three matches played at the Olympics. Former Hockey player Pargat Singh hoped that India would be able to put up a better show at this Olympics. In the shooting team, four players are from Punjab namely, Hina Sidhu, Abhinav bindra, Gurpreet singh and Manavjit Singh Sidhu. Hopes are also running high on Judo player Avtar Singh who is a native of Gurdaspur. A total of 119 players from India are participating in Rio Olympics.
