A young man with an axe attacks passengers on German train, several critically injured.


"In the direction of Wuerzburg, the attacker attacked travelers, 3 are severely injured, one is lightly injured, the attacker had a knife and an axe. The train had to make an emergency stop in Heidingsfeld, the attacker fled the train and was shot by police while fleeing," said police spokesman, Florian Huemmler.


A man with an axe attacked passengers on a train in the southern German state of Bavaria late on Monday (July 18) and several people were critically wounded, a police spokesman said.

The spokesman said the attack happened on a local train near the city of Wuerzburg. He could not confirm media reports that the attacker had been shot dead and said the police operation was still ongoing.

The rail line between Würzburg-Heidingsfeld and Ochsenfurt has been closed, the police spokesman said.

There was no indication of the motive for the attack.
