Security was reinforced on Monday (July 18) near a police station in Kazakhstan financial capital Almaty after the shooting that happened earlier.
Three policemen and one civilian were shot dead in a series of attacks in Kazakhstan's financial hub on Monday, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
The 27-year-old attacker, who was detained, also wounded two more policemen and is suspected of committing another murder last weekend, it said, adding that he had an accomplice who was still at large.
Authorities in Kazakhstan believe Islamist militants bear responsibility for the attacks a law enforcement source told Reuters.
