Turkish military have sealed off bridges in Istanbul, as the Prime Minister confirms a coup attempt is underway.
Binali Yildirim added that the military are acting outside the chain of command and security forces are working to resolve the situation. “The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so,” he remarked.
Istanbul’s Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge have been closed.
Dogan News Agency showed queues of cars and buses being diverted.
Witnesses said that military jets and helicopters could be seen flying over Ankara, and gunfire could be heard in the Turkish capital.
