An attacker behind the wheel of a heavy truck careened into crowds of people in the southern French city of Nice, killing at least 84 people and injuring scores of others, according the latest reports.
The truck crashed into the crowd that had gathered for a Bastille Day fireworks show over a long distance on the Promenade des Anglais, a celebrated seaside promenade.
Authorities in the local Alpes-Maritimes prefecture described the incident as a major criminal attack, adding that the driver was shot by the police.
