[] Yup, NOAA sends in a team to get soundings (their word for readings) from the hurricane regularly in order to aid in predictions of the strength and path of the storm. On land we have permanent stations and use balloons, but out to sea they have to take more drastic measures.
Last I heard they were taking two soundings a day to improve data collection. They may have further increased it as the storm approached shore, but most likely not (as there are only so many model runs that can be accomplished in a day, so more data has only minimal use).
