ISTANBUL — At least 36 people were killed and 147 others injured in a terrorist attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport on Tuesday.

Two gunmen armed with AK-47s exchanged fire with security guards at the entrance to the international terminal, CNN reported. One of the attackers then detonated a suicide bomb outside the terminal building.

Witnesses said one of the attackers opened fire inside the terminal, according to CNN. He detonated a suicide bomb after being shot by a police officer.

A third suicide bomber blew himself up in a multi-storey car park opposite the terminal, CNN reported.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said ISIS was responsible for the attack on the airport, which is the third busiest airport in Europe and the 11th busiest in the world. Almost 62 million passengers traveled through the airport last year, according to CNN.

The attack is the seventh terrorist atrocity in Turkey since October last year, according to the New York Times.

ISIS and Kurdish militants have carried out a series of bombings in Istanbul and the capital Ankara that have killed dozens and damaged Turkey’s tourism industry.
