The Fresno Bee is reporting that early Monday, the woman, whose name has not been released, left her newborn on a sofa while she went to open a door and let in some fresh air.
She knew her brother’s 2 dogs were in the yard, but thought they were tied up, according to WGHP.
Soon after, she heard crying and rushed over to find the animals had gotten in and mauled the child.
The baby was rushed to the hospital, but could not be saved.
Sgt. Dan Macias with Fresno police said, “At this point, we believe it was an unfortunate accident.”
Both dogs have been surrendered by the woman's brother and, according to an SPCA spokesperson, will be put down.
