A suicide bomb attack in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu has killed at least a dozen people.

The Al-Shabaab Islamic group attacked the Nasa-hablod hotel, telling police that “apostate members of the government” frequented it.

After the explosion its fighters stormed the building and gunfire broke out. Police said an unknown number of hostages were taken.

Al Shabaab frequently stages attacks in the city, aiming to overthrow the western backed government.

The attack comes as Muslims hold their fast in month of Ramadan in Somalia and worldwide.

Al Shabaab has staged attacks before during Ramadan, targeting places where people gather to break their fast.
