Which countries are the most peaceful in the world?
The top three are located in Europe, according to the 2016 Global Peace Index released recently by the Institute for Economics and Peace.
As the report states, “Iceland is once again the world’s most peaceful country, followed by Denmark, Austria, New Zealand and Portugal, which improved nine places.”
Rounding out the top 10 are the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Canada, Japan, and Slovenia.
The United States is ranked at 103, with medium peace status.
The index, which accounts for 163 areas and 99.7 percent of the global population, assesses 23 measures that factor into the level of peacefulness.
Portugal, for example, had the largest regional improvement, in part, because of reductions in violent demonstrations, political terror, and political instability.
That said, the report has found that, overall, “the world has become slightly less peaceful...when compared to the prior year.”
This slight downward trend is attributed largely to the continued conflict in Africa and the Middle East, notes The Telegraph.
