Scientists and researchers from Antarctica New Zealand, a New Zealand government agency, are conducting environmental and scientific tests to assess changes to the local environment. They also have to prepare for a life without the sun as the region will not see the natural light again for four months. Anthony Powell, a New Zealand filmmaker, is giving insights on this grave challenge. Chef at the base, Keith Garrett, said not experiencing the sun's warmth on his face for four months will be a challenge.
One bonus of the darkness is the sight of southern lights or Aurora Australis, Powell adds, describing it as one of the greatest natural light shows in the world.
