ATLANTA — The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control has released what's become an annual warming about swimming pools.
According to the report, which is based on 2013 findings, "Most inspections of public aquatic venues [almost 80 percent] identified at least one violation."
After reviewing data on 84,187 routine inspections of 48,632 public aquatic venues, including pools, hot tubs, water playgrounds and other places, one in eight inspections resulted in immediate closure because of serious health and safety violations, and one in five kiddie/wading pools were closed.
The 2013 report found that 58 percent of the pool filter samples tested were positive for E. coli, bacteria normally found in the human gut and feces, and 59 percent contained Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can cause skin rashes and ear infections.
Last year's report said, "What you smell [in a pool] are actually chemicals that form when chlorine mixes with pee, poop, sweat, and dirt from swimmers' bodies." It is the mix between those chemicals that causes eyes to sting, not chlorine alone.
