GALT, CALIFORNIA — Over the past five weeks, the Galt Police Department has been receiving reports about a dog running around the median on Highway 99 in California. Every time they drove over to investigate, the dog was nowhere to be found.
On April 10, a citizen called in to report having seen a dog fall off a moving pickup truck on the interstate. Finally on May 14, police were able to track down the mysterious canine and bring her to safety using a snare, with the assistance of California Highway Patrol officers.
Upon rescuing the German shepherd breed, she was taken to an animal hospital. Veterinarians treating the dog found that she'd suffered a broken leg, likely from when she fell off the pickup truck all those weeks ago. Vets suspect she survived off garbage and rainwater, as she weighed in at only 44 pounds when they got her, 20 pounds less than a healthy weight.
Now back on the mend at a local animal shelter, she's been given the name "Freeway Frida" until she's either reunited with her owner, or adopted by a new family.
