EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY — A toddler was mauled by two pit bull mixes in a New Jersey home over the weekend.
On May 14, 3-year-old Janaya Everett was found covered in blood upstairs in her grandmother's home on North Maple Avenue in East Orange.
Dwyane Harper, Janaya's grandmother's boyfriend, was working on a car outside when he heard blood-curdling screams coming from inside the home.
"The baby was laying on the floor bloody with her scalp all messed up, and just a mess ... horrible, horrible thing," Harper told ABC 7.
According to Harper, the girl was attacked by two pit bull mixes that live in the basement of the home. The dogs snuck into the house when Janaya's grandmother left the room.
Eyewitness Andy Jacobson also came to the toddler's aid and sat with the family until EMTs arrives on the scene. He told ABC 7 that the emergency responders wasted no time grabbing Janaya with bare arms and carrying her straight to the ambulance.
The toddler was rushed to University Hospital and immediately underwent surgery. She is expected to make a full recovery. Both dogs have been removed from the home, and will most likely be put down.
