Gran Turismo 6 Gameplay. Just a quick video of an early race in the National B class, driving a stock Renault Clio, a car you receive as a reward quite early in the game. Outside of full playthroughs you don't normally see people uploading these low level races but after all the hassles I had to go through in order to play GT6 I wanted to put something on my channel a.s.a.p. and type out my initial thoughts on the game. Initially I had some really fun karting footage planned but for some reason GT6 and my video editing software didn't play nicely together and I ended up with some horrible audio that sounded like a load of squeaking springs drowning out the game sounds. I have no idea what caused it other than the compression software I use but how or why? No clue I'm afraid.
So, what were the hassles I was talking about with the game itself ...........?
Well, GT6 is a good game, a big game, an improvement over GT5 in some ways but if you are thinking of buying it be aware of a couple of things.
Firstly, if you buy a disk copy, be warned that it may or may not work in your console. I bought one copy and returned it after my 500gb Slim refused to read it. So, after a week of waiting I put in the new replacement and.....nothing but a lot of grinding, clicking and whirring from my machine's drive.
So, I go online and find that this is a common problem with GT6 which is a dual layered bluray disk and frequently fails to work. The arguments rage over why this happens but it doesn't really matter - producing a game disk with such a glaring problem is a pretty poor effort and should have been recognized and resolved before the game's release. Apparently people have replaced their Bluray drives and all sorts in attempts to get the game to work....yeah right, f*** that noise. I will say that cleaning my Bluray laser's lens made absolutely no difference and, like most other people who have had the problem, every other game or Bluray disk works perfectly in my machine.
I try the disk in my son's older 160GB slim and it reads fine! Not a lot of good to me though, so I purchase the digital download from the Playstation Store. I do the 15GB download and install and am prompted to then install 19 updates! So, I download them all and install them. When I eventually get to start the game.......er, no I don't - because the game then says it is preparing to update and promptly fails to install updates!! WTF!
After a night's sleep I return to the issue and find online that the only solution seems to be to download and install each update one by one. This took me around seven hours to complete. Thanks Sony and thanks Polyphony - I really don't think this will win friends and influence people, do you?
So, finally I get to play GT6 and so far I'm liking it a lot, so thank f*** for that at least. . The typical GT grind is still in there, but not to the extent that it leaves you with nothing new to do until the grind is completed in chronological order. It's not nearly as rigid as some previous iterations of the game and this is a good thing.
It's pretty to familiar to anyone who has played the franchise before and I can see that for many people that is a problem, making them feel that Gran Turismo has stagnated and that just as GT5 offered little new over GT4, GT6 does little to broaden the experience of GT5.
So far I think the physics feel like an improvement over GT5 although I've barely driven a handful of the cars on offer. I'm also glad to see that all that premium/standard car nonsense has been scrapped from this game. I'm happy with the available tracks (could be more but that's true of most if not all racing titles), it looks really good and, contrary to popular opinion, I don't think it sounds too bad. Not great maybe, but not as bad as some claim. Damage model? Laughable as always but this is Gran Turismo and we all know that already so no point in complaining about it to be honest.
So, would I recommend it? Yes, and not just to total petrol heads. It remains a great game with a lot of content and now it's available at a reasonable price it represents great value. If you intend to play online, just be aware that after the ve
