New Delhi, May 15 (ANI): The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday predicted that the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala will be delayed by a week with rains expected on June 7. The onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala signals the arrival of monsoon over the Indian subcontinent and represents beginning of rainy season over the region. The normal monsoon onset over Kerala is 1 June. Addressing a press conference in the national capital, B.P. Yadav, the IMD Director said the delayed monsoon this year, which normally arrives by June 01, has a model error of plus or minus four days The monsoon season delivers 70 percent of India's annual rainfall, which is crucial for agriculture and economic growth that has been hampered by back-to-back droughts.
