Police Disperse Crowds After Surprise Besigye Appearance in Kampala

Ugandan opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party’s presumed president-elect, made a surprise visit to the capital Kampala on Wednesday, May 11, one day before the swearing in of President Yoweri Museveni. Uganda’s electoral commission says that Museveni won the presidential election with 61 percent of the vote, which Besigye disputes.

Security forces were seen dispersing crowds of Besigye supporters on Wednesday by beating them with clubs and firing tear gas, according to Daily Monitor.
