Egypt: Funeral for eight policemen shot dead in Cairo

Egypt has held a military funeral for eight policemen gunned down in an ambush in the capital. The minister of the interior attended the ceremony in Cairo.

State media reported that the officers had been inspecting security in a suburb south of Cairo when gunmen opened fire on their minibus.

An affiliate of the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted online.

The faction has killed hundreds of security personnel in the Sinai peninsula since the overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013. But the latest attack near the capital marks significant escalation.
