PORTAGE, INDIANA — An 18-year-old transgender teen is running for prom queen at her high school in Indiana.
Dakota Yorke is a senior at Portage High School. She has long identified as a girl more than a boy, and says she has dreamed of being a high school prom queen since she was little.
Thanks to her supportive school officials and classmates, Yorke has a chance to fulfill that dream this weekend. She is one of the four finalist competing for the tiara.
Yorke said she wants to be an inspiration for other transgender teens by becoming the prom queen.
"This is not about winning that crown," Yorke told Chicago Tribune. "For other transgender teens, this is about following your dreams and being who you are, not who people think you are."
