Dog caught in bear trap stays alive for two weeks by eating snow

PRZEMYSL, POLAND — A resilient dog named Forest braved the fight of his life for two weeks in March, and lived for others to tell his tale.

Wandering a wooded area in Poland, Forest suddenly noticed he was stuck – two of his legs had got caught to a wire bear trap. The trap acted like a noose, tightening as the Forest struggled to break free.

After several days, he'd lost the energy to even howl for help. His two left legs now infected, all he could do to stay alive was to lick the snow around him to stay hydrated. No one knows who did this to Forest, but given the trap was set to catch a bear, his rescuers believe there's a good chance the hunter it belonged to had checked on it at some point, and left Forest to die.

Forest was eventually found in the woods by an animal welfare group in Przemysl. His two infected legs had suffered from infection, and had to be amputated as a result of the wire trap that had cut through his flesh all the way to his bones. After being rescued and fending off a fever, he almost died from parasitic worms draining him from the inside.

But his new caregivers report he's probably out of the woods now, and if they can raise enough funds to have him fitted for prosthetic legs, they hope he'll be back to his playful self soon.
