Military tactics of the 1950s were studied and the conclusion was that a heavy transport and troop-carrying helicopter capable of airlifting combat materiel weighing up to six tonnes (13,228 lb), such as artillery pieces with tractors, heavy trucks and self-propelled guns for the airborne assault troops, was necessary.
