A new poll commissioned by the BBC World Service and conducted by GlobeScan has found that 51 percent of more than 20,000 people surveyed globally see themselves “more as global citizens than citizens of their country."

People typically claim allegiance to one country, but this perspective may be changing.

According to a new poll commissioned by the BBC World Service and conducted by GlobeScan, 51 percent of 20,000-plus people surveyed globally self-identify “more as global citizens than citizens of their country.”

As a press release about the research notes, this is the first time the majority has shifted to a broader world view since 2001.

The countries that contributed the most to this trend were found to be lesser developed areas like Nigeria which had a 13 point increase from last year to 73 percent and Peru which surged 27 points to 70 percent.
