The fish appears to be trying to crawl to safety after it is placed on hot coals for cooking - but how is it still moving? Creepy footage has emerged online showing the moment a 'zombie' eel desperately wriggles on a barbecue after apparently being skinned alive.

The fish, which is laid on hot coals, flaps around violently as it seems to be trying to escape its inevitable fate.

Undeterred by the animal's odd behaviour, the chef simple places the eel back on the grill with a pair of cooking tongs.

The bizarre footage has been uploaded to LiveLeak.com where it has been viewed more than 95,000 times. But while the eel appears to be alive, helpful viewers have explained that actually the movement is all to do with a chemical reaction as the fish is being cooked.

Viewers commenting on the video wrote: "The eel is actually already dead (hence the lack of head, skin and guts hanging out).

"The flopping around is the result of the freshly killed eel being sprinkled with salt.

"The sodium ions in the salt cause the nerves to fire and therefore make the muscles contract," they added.
