Japanese media say the death toll from the two earthquakes in southern Japan has risen to 39.
Kyodo News agency, citing officials in Kumamoto prefecture, says 30 people died in the magnitude-7.3 quake that struck early Saturday morning.
The other victims died in the magnitude-6.5 quake on Thursday night.
Officials had said earlier Saturday that 10 had died in Thursday’s quake and 22 in Saturday’s.
Of the 1,500 people injured, 80 of them had serious injuries, said chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga.
Nearly 91,000 people were forced from their homes.
