The major occupation of this district is farming and 75% total labour force is dependent on agriculture for its livelihood. People are leaving their natives, vacating the houses and moving towards the city areas to find water. Tungabhadra Dam, the only water resource in the drought-hit Bellary, is empty as there is no rain and ground water. The Canal network accounts for 64% of irrigated area but less rain during successive years has left the tanks, rivers and canals arid. Farmers are even selling their animals and leaving the place.
