SARASOTA, FLORIDA — A few days after a man tragically lost his life in a crash on Interstate 75, a photo surfaced of one of the teenage brothers involved in that crash smiling by a wrecked Volvo that authorities say he was riding in.
The photo shows the passenger of the vehicle smiling and posing with the words "RIP Volv" with a smiley face emoji with a tear, and a semi truck emoji next to it.
The photo was posted to the teen's Instagram account. It then went viral over social media and was eventually shared on Facebook as well.
A tanker driven by Robert D. Drewelus, 53, was loaded with 8,500 gallons of gasoline when it was traveling in the outside lane going southbound on Interstate 75 at 3:01 a.m. on March 29. A Volvo S80 driven by a 16-year-old was travelling in front of the truck.
The tanker rear ended the Volvo and veered into the west shoulder of the highway, troopers said. It overturned and burst into flames.
Drewelus was thrown from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene.
The Volvo driver fled the scene with his 15-year-old brother, who was a passenger in the car. The Volvo was later located at the Gateway Lakes Apartment, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The 16-year-old driver was later located at a Lakewood Ranch residence at 7:02 a.m.
The 16-year-old was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with death, which is a second-degree felony, and violating a learner's permit restriction.
Drivers under the age of 18 in Florida are subject to a curfew.
The 15-year-old brother's Instagram account has since been deactivated with a disclaimer that it was hacked.
