Thousands of dead fish washed up on the banks of a polluted Ulsoor lake on Monday in Bengaluru.
A stink pervaded the air in a residential district around the lake, in the centre of the city.
Sewage from all over the city has been flowing into the lake and mixing with fresh water said V. Purushottam, president of a local residents' group.
Purshottam said a barrier that was supposed to keep sewage from flowing into the lake had broken, and that authorities had ignored earlier pleas to repair it.
