Deadly bus crash kills 13 students in Spain, dozens more injured

FREGINALS, SPAIN — The Catalan government announced two days of mourning for the young lives claimed by one of Spain's worst road accidents in the past two decades.

Reuters reports that students from 19 different countries, many of whom were part of the Erasmus exchange program, were returning to Barcelona from the Fallas Festival in Valencia early Sunday morning. The group had been on a bus travelling along the AP-7 motorway near the Freginals — the last of five buses in a convoy.

According to the New York Times, the bus hit a railing on the right side of the road around 6 a.m. After violently swerving to the left, it cartwheeled across the highway, crashing through the central barrier and onto the opposite lane. It hit a car with two passengers. Both were injured but survived.

The crash killed 13 female students aged 22 to 29. Of the 43 injured, 28 were still in the hospital as of Sunday afternoon, three of whom were in critical condition.

Authorities are still investigating what exactly caused the crash, though initial findings suggest the accident was a result of human error.

Police are currently questioning the driver of the bus, who survived the crash. He tested negative for drugs and alcohol, and has had no record of any other accidents in the past 17 years.
