As part of training exercises, the USS Hartford submarine recently surfaced straight through the ice of the Arctic Circle--with a little bit of help.
A Video released by the U.S. Navy shows the USS Hartford emerging from beneath the ice of the Arctic Circle.
The surfacing submarine broke through the ice on March 10 as part of Ice Exercise 2016, which the Navy describes as "...a five-week exercise designed to research, test, and evaluate operational capabilities in the region."
In the video, the submarine's tower swiftly pokes up and beyond the thick, arctic frost, prompting celebratory laughter and cheers from onlookers.
An aerial view catches the extent of the disruption caused by the naval vessel.
