I stop by Gongaga to pick up the Deathblow materia. I save to avoid a random encounter. I know I was really close to the ship, but not once was I able to make it all the way there. I almost never made it as far as I did, actually. And if I did make it, I would have had to save in front of the Temple of the Ancients to avoid a random encounter any way.
