BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN — A routine traffic stop turned potentially dangerous for a Michigan police officer on Saturday, March 5.
Footage from Battle Creek police officer Brad Gentry's vehicle showed the moment he was nearly shot in the face.
Gentry had stopped a car after flagging it for speeding near Hubbard Street and Goodale Avenue in Battle Creek, Michigan, around 3:12 p.m. As he approached the vehicle's driver side window and said, "What's up, man?", 21-year-old Darriyone Zamone Clark-Brown greeted the officer with a blast from his handgun.
Gentry wasn't actually shot and returned fire as Clark-Brown fled the scene in his vehicle. Gentry reported "shots fired, shots fired," into his radio and stated, "He shot me. I'm not hit." The officer followed in pursuit and chased Clark-Brown for four minutes through the residential area, reaching speeds up to 70 mph.
The suspect ignored road signs and dodged other vehicles on the snowy roads. At one point, Clark-Brown had spun his car around to face Officer Gentry, who was following close behind. Clark-Brown regained control and continued fleeing.
Gentry reported his every move. Over the radio, another voice could be heard saying, "If anybody can take that car out, do it."
Gentry later tells his colleagues he is barely able to hear his radio. Another officer responded saying, "Go ahead and bow out. Let us pass you." Other police cruisers then take the lead as Clark-Brown pulled over and took off on foot.
The dash cam footage ends there, but police were able to follow Clark-Brown to his mother's home on W. Coolidge Street just west of North Avenue, about a mile from the initial traffic stop. A standoff ensued and came to an end around 7 p.m. when police and K-9 units obtained permission and entered the home. They found the suspect hiding in the basement. The ordeal ended when a K-9 bit Clark-Brown.
Officers later recovered a revolver near Goodale Avenue and Kendall Street after an anonymous caller found the weapon in the snow. They believe Clark-Brown had dropped the weapon when fleeing on foot.
He does not appear to have a significant criminal record or a valid driver's license.
Clark-Brown was arraigned Monday in Calhoun County District Court on charges of assault with intent to murder, carrying a concealed weapon, felony firearm, fleeing and eluding, resisting, obstructing or assaulting an officer and driving without a license. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
