EU and Turkey plans one-in, one-out deal for Syrian refugees

ANKARA, TURKEY — The EU and Turkey have agreed on a new plan that aims at curbing the huge influx of refugees into the EU.

The new one-in, one-out system only applies to Syrian refugees. Under the new system, all illegal migrants crossing from Turkey to the Greek islands will be returned to Turkey. In exchange for every returned Syrian refugee, EU would admit one refugee directly from Turkey.

The EU will also provide funding to Turkey to build facilities such as housing and schools for Syrian refugees that stay in Turkey. The EU also plans to ease access to the EU for Turkish citizens, with a possible plan to allow visa-free travel by June 2016.

The deal has not yet been finalised and talks will continue ahead of a EU meeting on March 17 to 18.

The United Nations and human rights group warned that the tentative new deal could violate the international law that promises protections for refugees.

According to the BBC, more than a million refugees entered the EU illegally by boat, mainly from Turkey to Greece while another 2.7 million refugees stayed in Turkey last year.
