WHITEWATER, WISCONSIN — A group of white students branded racist after they posted a photo to social media of themselves in exfoliation masks that were mistaken for blackface insist they meant no harm.
The unnamed University of Wisconsin-Whitewater undergraduates said they were sorry if the photo posted to Snapchat last Wednesday was misinterpreted, Fox 6 reported.
Without speaking to the students first, the university's chancellor Beverly Kopper called the post "racist," "hurtful" and "destructive," in a message posted to the university's official website on Thursday.
Kopper rushed to interpret the photo as blackface, according to the National Review. Blackface is the form of theatrical makeup used by actors to represent a black person, which gained popularity during the 19th century.
Some students said the incident came at a sensitive time for race relations on campus, according to Fox 6.
The university's Black Student Union condemned a video recently posted to social media in which two white students use the "N" word repeatedly. Members of the union also told Fox 6 they were skeptical about the explanation offered by the students wearing the cosmetic masks.
So what do you think?
Is this a case of the political correctness gone mad, or is there an underlying problem here that needs to be addressed?
