ANKARA, TURKEY — A car bomb targeting a military convoy in Turkey left at least 28 people dead on Wednesday.
The attack took place during evening rush hour in the capital of Ankara, in a neighborhood where Turkey's parliament and Department of Defense are located.
The blast hit a convoy of buses carrying military personnel as they waited at a red light.
Reports said a vehicle laden with explosives detonated next to the buses, with the explosion engulfing several vehicles in flames and sending plumes of smoke high into the evening sky.
Officials said that 28 people were killed in the attack and a 61 others were injured.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but some officials suggested that Kurdish militants may have been responsible.
The explosion comes as the Turkish government steps up action against Kurdish rebels gaining territory in Syria along Turkey's southern border. Last week Turkish armed forces began shelling Kurdish positions in Syria.
