The US laid down plans several years ago to carry out a cyberattack against Iran if the nuclear peace talks failed, according to a new documentary film covered in the Times of Israel.
The plan, under the name Nitro Zeus, would have taken down Iran's communication systems, air defenses and critical parts of its power grid.
Nitro Zeus was developed in the early years of the Obama presidency, according to the New York Times, and was a contingency plan in the event that Iran somehow attacked the US or one of its Middle East allies.
The plan was thought to be an alternative to launching an all-out war and was invested in heavily by the US administration.
Tens of millions of dollars went into implanting elements into Iranian computer networks in order, according to the Pentagon, to "prepare the battlefield."
The project also involved thousands of US military and intelligence personnel, the NYT reports.
