Cliffs collapse into ocean as earthquake shakes New Zealand

CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND — The earth moved for some cliffs in New Zealand on Valentine's Day, as a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck the country's south island.

The epicenter of the earthquake yesterday was just nine miles east of Christchurch, where a 2011 quake killed 185 people.

This time, however, the city survived major damage and no deaths were reported.

But the cliffs weren't so lucky, as they fell into the South Pacific Ocean in several areas along coastline surrounding Christchurch.

Parts of the cliffs retreated up to 5 meters (16 feet), geotechnical engineer Jan Kupec Linz told TVNZ.

No serious injuries were reported but some climbers told TVNZ they were hit by falling rocks.

New Zealand's seismological body Geonet said there were more than 40 aftershocks, according to Reuters.

Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel said the quake shocked residents but the city was stronger than it was five years ago, according to Reuters.
