The Red-Eared Slider (RES), Trachemys scripta elegans, is a medium sized semi-aquatic turtle that is native to parts of the Southern United States. This species has now been introduced throughout the country and throughtout the world, due to the pet trade. Red-Eared Sliders are built to compete with other species, in habitats that sometimes support up to six species of turtle. This situation has made them a strong turtle and appropriate specimen for farming in large numbers. Millions of RES have been exported to support Asian countries that have already depleted their own resources. Consequently, introduction of the RES had been confirmed in Japan, South Korea, Guam, Thailand, Germany, France, South Africa, Israel and Australia as long as 2 decades ago, with many more adding the list since. RES have also been introduced in most of the United States, including Hawaii.
Red-Eared Sliders have been available in many types of genetic color morphs in the pet trade. The Caramel Pink Red Eared Slider is considered perhaps the most desirable of all RES morphs. With its trademark Terminator eyes and creamy off-white to light pink skin, the Caramel Pink Red Eared Slider is also as hardy as morphs can get. Caramels have eyesight which is as strong as that of a normal turtle, and will grow at rates as fast as well. Albino and Snow RES often have considerably impaired eyesight, and subsequently grow at slower rates.
