A new study has found that around 4.5 billion years ago, a planetary body named Theia had a head-on collision with young Earth; material from the two became fused and resulted in present-day Earth as well the creation of the moon.

Earth is likely made up of material from two planets, according to a new study.
Scientists have long suspected that a planetary body called Theia, which was about the size of Mars, collided with young Earth around 4.5 billion years ago.
This theory, known as the giant impact hypothesis, had previously held that the crash happened at a roughly 45-degree angle, or a sideswipe.
