MORGANTON, NORTH CAROLINA — A teenager from North Carolina held on terrorism charges is accused by federal prosecutors of murdering his elderly neighbor.
Justin Nojan Sullivan, 19, was arrested on June 19 last year in an FBI sting and accused of plotting to massacre up to 1,000 people in an ISIS-inspired attack, the New York Daily News reported.
But according to charges unsealed on Monday, the teenager had already killed.
Sullivan converted to Islam and pledged allegiance to ISIS no later than September of 2014, according to a federal indictment. He allegedly watched violent ISIS videos online, such as beheadings.
Prosecutors allege the teenager stole a Marlin .22 caliber rifle from his father's gun cabinet and say the weapon was in Sullivan's possession on Dec. 18, 2014, when he broke into the home of neighbor John Bailey Clark.
Clark, 74, lived just four doors down from Sullivan's home in the city of Morganton.
Sullivan is accused of shooting his neighbor dead, then burying him in the elderly man's back yard. He also allegedly stole $689 from Clark, with which he planned to buy an AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifle.
The teenager hid the rifle used to kill Clark under his home, along with muddy clothes, a black ski mask and a lock-pick kit, according to the indictment.
Sullivan allegedly told an undercover agent to prove his loyalty by shooting a few people, according to the Daily Beast. He also offered money to kill his parents because he was worried they would disrupt his plans.
The teenager is due to stand trial on Feb. 22 on charges he planned an ISIS-style slaughter at a concert, bar or club, according to the New York Daily News.
