New York Man traps pigeons and stuffs them into a bag to take home

NEW YORK — A man was caught on camera taking pigeons off the streets of New York.

The 17-second video shows a man holding a net and a bag of live pigeons rushing to his van parked on the side of a street. At one point a bystander can be heard saying, "Excuse me." But the man just quickly rushes by.

A New York woman posted the video last week on Jan. 29 on Facebook under the name Sarah Wagner.

"So today I was officially creeped out. I was walking in the East Village, and I saw a guy feeding a whole bunch of birds.... After a while a lot of birds came and he went in his van to grab a net and proceeded to walk to the pigeons and slammed a net over them," she wrote. "The birds were freaking out and he carried them in the net and put them in the back seat of his van and sped off. Everyone was like WTF!"

Trapping pigeons is illegal in New York City without a permit. Anyone caught could face a misdemeanor for carrying an animal "in a cruel manner," which is punishable by jail time for up to a year or a fine of $1,000 — or both.

But, taking pigeons is nothing new in the state. Last summer, nearly 300 birds were swiped from Washington Square Park in a similar fashion, the Washington Square Park Blog reported. According to the blog, the activists warned that the captured pigeons would be driven to Pennsylvania, where they would be sold as live targets in shooting contests.

But despite all the activity, the NYPD said it is aware of the new video, but had not begun investigating because complaints have been filed.
