The aircraft element of a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is known as the Aviation Combat Element (ACE) and is primarily comprised of 5 different aircraft - CH-53E Super Stallion, AH-1Z Viper, AV-8B Harrier, UH-1Y Venom, and MV-22 Osprey. On July 31, 2015 the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter was declared operational by the Marine Corps and is slated to gradually replace the Harrier.
