About 100 fires triggered by lightning strikes are destroying large areas of Tasmania; included in the casualties are 1,000-year-old trees that are located within world heritage forests.

Fires on an island off Australia are destroying some of the oldest known trees in the world, and experts believe once they are gone, they will not grow back.
The devastated area is Tasmania, which is home to world heritage forests including one called Gondwana.
Since last week, approximately 100 fires triggered by lightning strikes have ravaged 89,000-plus acres of land.
