Ralph Vaughan Williams is likely Britain’s most distinguished composer of the 20th Century; his work ranges from a variety of styles. First, he was an unabashed nationalist romantic. Second, he shifted into cynical modernism with touches of impressionism after WWI, and finally he developed a very particular vein of post-romanticism whilst in his 70’s and 80’s. His Serenade in A minor is his very first symphonic piece. It is an abstract work which was initially in four movements to which RVW added a Romance in between the Intermezzo and the finale. The work was unfortunately not to the composers’ taste and withdrew it. It was recently rediscovered and edited by Julius Rushton.

Segundo, tras la 1GM, su música pasó a un modernismo cínico con toques impresionistas y finalmente entre sus 70 y 80 años, RVW desarrolló una vena muy particular de pos-romanticismo. Su Serenata en La menor es su primera pieza sinfónica. Es una obra abstracta que inicialmente tenía cuatro movimientos a los cuales el compositor agregó un Romance entre el Intermezzo y el Final. La obra no fue del agrado del compositor quien la retiró de su catálogo. Fue recientemente redescubierta y editada por Julius Rushton.
