A typical walk to school for an Elmwood Park, New Jersey mother and her 6-year-old son became anything but on Wednesday when the boy was suddenly attacked by a raccoon.
The wild and potentially rabid animal sunk its teeth and claws into the child's face, and the mother began to scream.
Many in the area called 911, and neighbor Dan Walls rushed to the boy's aid.
Walls grabbed and threw the raccoon to the ground then hit the animal with a stick until it was dead.
The 6-year-old was taken to the hospital and given 9 stitches.
Results of a rabies test performed on the raccoon are expected Friday.
