Buddhism is not a religion, but is a way of living, the structure of life. The major sites of Buddhism in India are Bodhgaya, Sarnath and Kushi Nagar. Each site has its own legend about Buddha, from enlightenment to giving first sermon to his disciples to Mahaparinirvana (salvation).
